As many readers of this website will be aware; the Organic Gardens site is owned by the Congelow Organic Educational Charitable Trust (the ‘Congelow Trust’).

The Congelow Trust was set-up in 1991, by local farmer (the late) Donald Cooper and his wife Marie (‘Pixie’), with its stated object being “to advance the education of the general public in the principles of organic farming growing and gardening in particular by carrying out or assisting in carrying out research into agriculture and land estate management in relation to organic farming and publishing the useful results of such research”. That same object is repeated in the Congelow Trust’s Annual Reports, where they also state that they continue to “…participate in the development of the Yalding Organic Garden, whilst exploring other opportunities for providing support to the organisations involved in the advancement of Organic Farming, growing and gardening…”

Ecolibrium Solutions’ Straw Bale Gardener’s Hut at Yalding Organic Gardens

This was a project built on a very tight budget for the use of the gardeners at Yalding Organic Gardens and HDRA.

This was achieved by utilising vounteer labour (the gardeners themselves!) and reclaimed materials wherever possible.

A very simple one room timber frame building with a small attic space for storage. Straw bale infil and rendered with 3 coats of lime. A final 2-3 coats of limewash gave the building a lovely finish.

The underfloor insulation was made up of recycled polystyrene plant trays – a by product from the gardens. Insulation in the attic space was cellulose (recycled newspaper).

To quote from Maro’s ‘Kent Food News’, received today…

…It is with some regret that we have had to close the gardens for the winter. We have decided after 2 seasons that the gardens are not a good fit with the rest of our business, and we were struggling to make them financially viable.

We are currently talking to several interested parties about taking over the management of the gardens and expect them to open again in the Spring.

Any interested parties can contact us via  enquiry@marofoods.co.uk…”

Today; we received the following statement from the Congelow Trust, the owners of the Organic Garden site:

…”The gardens are not closing.  The Trustees are in discussions with the current operator over changes to the gardens operations.  It is the Trusts’ intention that the gardens will continue to thrive and prosper”…

We will of course post any additional information – as and when available.
