New Gardens’ operator Paul Smith was interviewed on BBC Kent’s ‘Sunday Gardening’ programme on the 30th May.

The programme is available on BBC iPlayer ‘Listen Again’ here - and the interview starts at 1 hour, 18 minutes in.

Elsewhere on this site, Vivienne expressed the thoughts of many, in welcoming the latest reopening news.

We completely agree; insofar as the re-opening itself is concerned – and it is very good to see some of the site improvements – especially to access – that are being made. Our concerns however, are still in the areas of ‘ethos’ and ‘emphasis’ – effectively; ‘what the Gardens are all about’.

Probably all working from the same press release; but we will publish links to articles about the re-opening here – as we find them: continue reading…

Back to the Yalding Gardens…The Gardens (formerly Yalding Organic Gardens) will reopen with a garden party at 12pm on Saturday the 12th June. Entrance to the Gardens will be free and there will be a selection of edible goodies, tea and coffee on sale throughout the afternoon. Also, there will be an opportunity to purchase annual membership at a 25 percent discount. If you haven’t visited the five-acre gardens before, you’ve missed out. They are magical, educational and a totally relaxing place to spend an afternoon. Oh, and despite the name change, they are still certified organic… so if you’re looking for tips and ideas on how you can garden organically, this is a great place for inspiration.

It was with mixed emotions that we found (yes; found – as we have come to expect, nobody has actually told us) the website for “The Yalding Gardens and Bushel Box Farmshop and Cafe” at www.yaldinggardens.org.

A mixture; because – yes, we are delighted to see the Gardens re-opening and we really do want them to be a great success – but (and a very big ‘but’) we were greatly disappointed to see that our earlier concerns that the organic purpose and ethos of the gardens were being ‘diluted’, have been proven justified. Not only does the word ‘organic’ not feature in the new name; but the fact that the gardens are even organic, deserves no more mention than as an italicised footnote, under the admission charges. Conversely; their “ambition to become the best cafe in the UK” (!) receives somewhat more prominent billing!

We have to be mindful of (again) being accused of being unsupportive; but it has to be said, that we have concerns…

As you may have seen elsewhere on this site; Tania has had a telephone call from the father of Paul Smith (the new ‘operator’) saying that the Gardens will definitely open on the 12th June. continue reading…

Once again; the source of information is the ‘Blooming Green Flowers’ Blog; which states… continue reading…
